DCC leaf collection plan (2022) for GADRA area.

Dublin City Council Leaf Collection Plan 2022 for GADRA area

GADRA welcome the North Central Environmental Liason Officer Joanne O’Sullivan to the area and would like to thank Cllr Patricia Roe for all her work on the leaf fall issues. There are changes this year mainly in the bags that are to be used .

This year we are to ONLY USE THE CLEAR COMPOSTABLE BAGS WITH THE DCC LOGO ON THEM  and please DO NOT USE THE BLUE BAGS FOR LEAVES.

These bags will be available from Oct 3rd in Treacy’s Shop in The Rise.  We welcome back the leaf mulch cages along the DCU field – these cages are for leaves only and we need helpers who could volunteer an hour or so to help fill and maintain the cages especially from those who live close to this site.

I can confirm the following DCC action plan:

Waste Management will have staff sweeping footpaths, the compact sweeper will also clear footpaths, the large road sweeper will clear the main road followed by the compact sweeper.

We will only be using compostable leaf bags for collection of leaves this year (image attached). When collected by Waste Management Services Public Domain crews they will be forwarded to a composting facility instead of landfill or incinerator. The bags are 120 litre capacity and as they are made from compostable material, they are not as strong as plastic and should not be filled to the top as they will split/burst. The obvious  benefit of a compostable bag is its ability to completely break down into natural components, rapidly speeding up the decomposition process to as little as 90 days in some cases. Compostable bags have many other benefits such as reducing contributions to landfill.  There is also less greenhouse gas emissions and lower water and energy consumption during manufacturing. Compostable bags are safer for humans, animals, wildlife and the environment and provide great fertilizer when composted correctly. The compostable bags can be recognised easily as they contain the words “Compostable Bag” and carry the name and logo of Dublin City Council.
Please do not put Autumn leaves into DCC blue bags as those bags will be sent to landfill or incineration.

DCC will arrange for some compostable bags and an information sheet to be delivered to households on Griffith avenue (section from junction of Swords Road up to the Ballymun Road) This will be done by North central Area Office and Central Area Office

DCC will organise and supply additional leaf baskets for leaf mould composting

So hopefully our paths will remain safe for all this Autumn. Please help out by clearing the leaves from outside your house and bagging them in the correct bag and leaving this bag kerbside for collection. Once we have a number of bags full GADRA will arrange for them to be collected. Please do not use these compostable bags for any other purpose other than leaves.
